This is, quite simply, the best-selling small 4x4 in the UK. And little wonder. Because it has lots of great things to commend it, not least the fact that it's one of the few 4x4s that actually walks the walk when it comes to off-road performance - it's an incredibly capable car. Beyond this, though, it also offers first-rate levels of comfort, agility, visibility and more. Take, for example, its performance. Although all Freelanders share the same engine (a 2.2L diesel), there are several models to choose from, including a front-wheel drive model and an automatic, and all deliver an impressively smooth performance throughout the rev range. Even the eco-tuned eD4 doesn't lose performance, giving the same torque and power figures as the TD4. The ride's good, too - soft and comfortable without too much of the roll and sway that often comes with 4x4s. As to space, the Freelander feels big inside. And the reason for this is simple - it's because it is big inside. There's plenty of room to stretch out in the front, and three people easily fit in the back seats. Storage is good, too, with large door bins and other useful cubby holes for bits'n'pieces. Does the Freelander have faults? Yes, of course it does. But none that most people would want to climb out of the pram about. Perhaps one of the most common complaints is that its design is now looking a trifle long in the tooth, but this is a small price to pay for all the advantages it gives.
