Japan has been offering major tax breaks to small economical vehicles for years and it's in this legislation that many of the Daihatsu models have their roots. Models like the Cuore, Charade, Move and Copen roadster were all launched in the UK with engines smaller than 1,000cc. Buyers seeking a little more space and sporty flavour might like the Daihatsu YRV supermini. It was offered in Turbo 130 guise from 2003 and used second hand versions are around if you persevere. The Sirion is a more traditional supermini but neatly designed and reliable, as is the case with most of Daihatsu's output. Then there's the Terios, a tiny but trendy 4x4, and the Fourtrak which was more utilitarian but surprisingly capable off-road vehicle. One of Daihatsu's best efforts to date is the Materia launched in 2007. It's a deceptively spacious MPV with some innovative design touches and a distinctly Japanese character. Daihatsu sales levels have never been particularly high in the UK market so used car buyers might struggle to search out particular variants. If you want to buy a used Daihatsu though, now might be a good time to do it.
