The Volkswagen Polo may be getting on a bit these days (it was introduced in 1975), but it's still a pretty impressive supermini, offering one of the best combinations of practicality, performance, price and economy in its class. There are some who complain that, in terms of styling, the Polo is rather plain compared to rivals such as the Renault Clio, and this may be true - though, of course, it's a matter of taste. But even if it is comparatively low-key style-wise, there are plenty of compensations - so many, in fact, that it was named by Auto Express as 2016 Supermini of the Year. Take the engines, for example. There's lots of choice here, from the basic 1.0L 3-cylinder model up to the impressively-performing 1.8 TSI turbo petrol engine found in the Polo GTI. All offer a smooth and comfortable ride, and all are pretty economical, with the 1.4 TDI reporting 80mpg, and the BlueMotion (petrol) model delivering nearly 70mpg. When it comes to cabin space, the Polo may be small, but it's still roomy enough for taller drivers, and there's plenty of elbow room, though it has to be said that it doesn't offer the biggest boot in its class. If you fall in love with the Polo, but you need a big boot, you may want to look at the SE trim and upwards, which features an adjustable boot floor. Overall, this is a car with lots to commend it - in particular, it's high-quality feel and low running costs.
