There can't be many people who aren't familiar with the VW Beetle. It's been around for, well…forever, really. This, though, is an ‘all-new' version - a start-from-scratch reworking of the original concept that offers a larger frame, more space and a completely revised interior from previous versions of the iconic ‘People's car'. The idea is to appeal to a wider range of people. And it works - it impresses from the outside as well as from the inside, which has been designed to replicate that of the original Beetle, but with a modernistic feel. As to engines, UK buyers have four to choose from (2 petrol and 2 diesel). They're all pretty decent in terms of performance and economy, though the pick of the bunch is probably the 1.4L Twincharger (petrol) which delivers a very respectable 0-62mph time of 8.3 seconds. They all handle well, too, though most reviewers agree that they don't compete with either the MINI or DS 3 for agility or fun. Practicality, though, is a different matter. Here, the VW easily outperforms rivals such as the MINI, with a bigger boot, roomy and comfortable front seats and plenty of storage spaces - including two glove compartments and deep door bins. On the safety front, too, the Beetle scores very highly. In fact, it has a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and comes with six airbags, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes fitted as standard.
