The updated 2020 Mercedes E Class Coupe and Cabriolet
The Mercedes E Class Coupe and Cabriolet are getting a visual nip-n-tuck for 2020. However, it’s under the skin that the real changes are happening where owners will benefit from new technology and more efficient engines. In this article we’re going to tell you about some of the highlights.
With those sleek looking convertible and coupe versions of the E Class it was never going to be short on desirability. So, we’re pleased that tweaks have been fairly minor. Highlights include new reshaped LED headlights, a revised front bumper and grille and new two-piece taillights. There are also some new paint options which include high-tech silver, graphite grey metallic, Mojave silver and Patagonia red. Buyers will also be able to choose from a new selection of alloy wheels which Mercedes say are aerodynamically efficient. A range of trims will also be available including the obligatory spicy AMG versions.
Changes are equally revolutionary inside which is fine by us as we believe that the E Class has one of the best interiors around. There will be new trim options including trim inserts made from open pore wood or aluminium with light carbon-fibre grain dash inserts. There are clever new adaptive seats too which move automatically to the optimum position for the driver’s height. Mercedes have also updated its energising monitoring system to link to the driver’s smart-watch. It monitors their stress level, heartrate and quality of sleep. It then adjusts the cabin temperature, lighting and music accordingly. As before the E Class features the clever air-scarf which keeps the occupants necks warm when the rood is down. There’s also the air-car which helps to reduce drafts at speed.
You shouldn’t expect the E Class Coupe or Cabriolet to steer or ride much differently from the pre-facelifted model. So, you should still expect more of a cruiser then a bruiser. However, there are at least some tweaked engines that mate to a standard fit 9-speed automatic. The engine line-up consists of turbo-charged four and six cylinder petrol and diesel engines with 48 volt mild hybrid technology added to the four cylinder diesel line-up and six cylinder petrols. The diesel powered 191 bhp (brake horse power) E220D promises around 60 mpg (miles to the gallon) while the E400D packs an impressive 700 newton metre punch. For petrol buyers the E200 is available with rear or four-wheel-drive and uses 194 bhp 2.0 litre turbo-charged four cylinder engine to cover 0-62 miles per hour (mph) in around 7.6 seconds. The rear drive only E300 uses the same engine but tuned up to 254 bhp to cut the 0 to 62 mph time to 6.4 seconds. The four-wheel-drive E450 has 268 bhp for a 0 to 62 in 5 seconds.
As we come to expect no Mercedes model line is complete without a variant from AMG. So expect both the E Class Coupe and Convertible will be joined by E53 4matic versions sporting the usual AMG trinkets which include a different grille, new exhaust arrangement and carbon-fibre trim inside. Of greater appeal is the E53’s 3.0 litre in-line Six which has a 48 volt mild hybrid system to improve economy and drivability. Don’t think it’s lost any of its performance though as the Coupe model takes just 4.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph while the Cabriolet manages it in 4.6 seconds. Keeping all of this power in check are a host of chassis upgrades including new autonomous adaptive dampers, a 5 channel programmable traction control system and a set of enormous drilled and vented disc brakes with four piston callipers upfront and single piston callipers at the rear.
You should expect the 2020 E Class Coupe and Cabriolet to hit showrooms in the autumn with prices starting at around £46,000 for the Coupe and £48,000 for the Cabriolet.
