The 2020 Mercedes AMG E53 Coupe may be very difficult to ignore
The Mercedes AMG E53 4matic+ coupe is a rare kind of performance sporting car. Not only can it sprint from 0 to 62 miles per hour in under 4.5 seconds to the accompaniment of an emotive soundtrack but it also has a relatively efficient mild hybrid engine. It all delivers a pretty special and rather different grand touring experience. There’s a real sense of class, quality and style with this car that makes it unique at its price point.
If you choose this car expecting the scalpel sharp handling responses of a similarly priced, but slightly smaller, C63 coupe then you’ll be disappointed. However, it’s more everyday useable than the C63 thanks to an AMG Dynamic Select driving mode system and the addition of an AMG ride control version of the Mercedes air body control and air suspension system. In addition to this there’s 4matic+ all-wheel drive, a 9-speed AMD Speedshift TCT paddleshift automatic gearbox and an AMG performance exhaust for an authentic sports car soundtrack. All of this certainly helps to make this car dynamic enough to take on direct class rivals such as the BMW M850i coupe. Not only do you get from rest to 62 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds but the top speed has to be artificially restricted at 155 miles per hour (mph).
Few could argue that visually the 63 Series model has a unique look. You get AMG specific side-sill panels that deliver a more dynamic silhouette and there’s a twin blade radiator grille finished in silver chrome which adds that additional bit of quality. Step inside and you’re greeted with AMG specific upholstery and red seatbelts. There are also trim element in carbon fibre or a sort of glass fibre / matte silver combination. As with an ordinary E-Class coupe you get a wide screen cockpit which comprises of two high-resolution 12.3 inch screens which are merged under a single lens. However, with this car this area has a setup which includes a specific AMG menu.
Around at the back you can expect just about enough space for two adults to be reasonably comfortable. There’s certainly more room that you get in a Mercedes C-Class coupe or indeed a Lexus LC.
The E53’s engine is embellished with a bit of mild-hybrid tech. This sees an EcoBoost starter alternator motor mounted between the engine and the 9-speed gearbox. You shouldn’t get your hopes up too much about the difference all of this makes as the WLTP combined-cycle fuel reading is 31.4 miles to the gallon (mpg) while the NEDC rated Co2 return is 202 grams per kilometre.
The question we’d ask is whether you actually really need a faster and more luxurious performance coupe than this? Probably not. You could spend twice as much as what you’d pay for this car and not really better what this car can offer in terms of performance, dynamic ability and luxury. If you’re in the market for a very quick, very plush, four seater luxury coupe then this car may be very difficult to ignore.
