The 2021 Citroen C4 is the coolest in ages
If some of the deepest and darkest corners of the motoring internet are to believed then all new cars pretty much look the same these days. Everything is just so dull and boring. However, the car in our picture may just buck this way of thinking. The car in the photo is the all new Citroen C4. This has to be one of the coolest and quirkiest cars that we’ve seen in the family car class for ages. However, the question we have to ask is whether this new offering from Citroen has the substance required to back up the radical looks.
The latest generation of the C4 has evolved from a dreary five-door hatchback into what you see in the photo, a sort of mad part crossover part coupe like shape. It’s not as tall as a regular SUV but it’s slightly jacked up when compared too a traditional hatchback. It’s the detailing of this car that makes it stand out the most. At the front the C4 features Citroen’s signature split lighting design. However, with this car the LED running lights form a V-shape to either side. The chunky plastic cladding along either side adds a little SUV vibe and at the back there’s a split rear screen and V-shape lighting to mirror up what’s at the front. There are seven exterior colours and five contrasting colour packs to choose from while wheel sizes range from 16 inches and the 18 inch design on the car you see in our photo.
Step inside the C4 and you’ll note that the interior looks a little more conventional than the outside. It flaunts the type of digital displays you get in pretty much any cars these days. However, the big difference is that Citroen have focused on something more important with the C4. The big priority inside the C4 is comfort which is just how a Citroen should be in our view. It features the brand’s advanced comfort seats which is a fancy way of saying that it’s got fancy padding. Nevertheless the result means that they’re soft and forgiving on long journeys. One other thing you’ll notice is that the C4 now has physical switches for the climate control. Citroen say that they’re much easier to use than fiddly little icons on a touchscreen and we have to agree. This is a bit if a U-turn from Citroen when compared to its previous models which is nice to see. The emphasis on comfort is hammered home even more by Citroen’s engineers who tell us that plenty of focus has been placed on minimising noise and vibration for the occupants.
The C4 has a decent level in interior space despite the sloping roof while at the back there’s a 380 litre boot which is the same size as a Volkswagen Golf. At the other end the C4 get a selection of petrol and diesel engines. The three petrol options are all based around 1.2 litre turbocharged unit with 99, 128 or 153 brake horse power (bhp). A 1.5 litre diesel gets either a 108 or 128 bhp unit. The least powerful petrol and diesel engines come as standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The most powerful versions of each unit are fitted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Then there’s a the 128 bhp petrol that comes with a choice of either. As well as the petrol and diesel engines we’ve mentioned Citroen will also be selling the eC4. The eC4 is basically a fully electric version with a 50 kilowatt hour battery. The reason why Citroen can offer petrol, diesel and electric powertrains is thanks to the PSA Group’s CMP platform. It’s the same Citroen to make use of the same underpinnings that everything from the Peugeot 2008 to the Vauxhall Mokka sits on.
The new C4 is due to go on sale in early 2021 and it all looks very promising. However, it will need to be because there’s just so much competition that this car needs to live up to. There are family hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus plus crossovers like the Nissan Qashqai. The eC4 will need to take on cars like the Kia e-Niro too.
