Some good and bad things about the 2020 Jaguar F-Pace SVR
The car we’re featuring today is the Jaguar F-Pace. However it’s no ordinary F-Pace, it’s the SVR version and it’s the end product of what happens when team from Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicles Operations department get their hands on the normal F-Pace. In a nutshell, what they do is try and make it a whole lot angrier! The F-Pace SVR is a pumped up V8 engine performance SUV that acts as a flagship model for the Jaguar range. In this article we’re going to tell you about some of its best and worst bits.
Sound
If you’re hung up about the cost of an F-Pace SVR then reassurance is only a prod of the accelerator away. The 542 brake horse power (bhp) 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine sounds magnificent in full flow and pretty good when you’re just rumbling gently around town.
Performance
No two ways about it, this is a blisteringly quick SUV. It will get you from 0 to 62 miles per hour (mph) in just 4.3 seconds which is enough to challenge some supercars. You get four-wheel-drive to put the power down while the 8-speed automatic gearbox shifts quickly through a special set of ratios. These are unique to the SVR model and designed to make the most of the fabulous engine.
Drive
Let’s be clear that the weight of the V8 engine along with the overall size of the F-Pace means that it’s no sports car. However, the guys at the Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations team really have worked their magic on the suspension. The results is, whilst some fast SUVs feel sharper and faster to respond on the road, the F-Pace SVR offers a great blend of sporty driving characteristics and comfort. In normal driving there’s a surprisingly smooth ride even on the optional 22 inch wheels that are fitted.
Design
You’ll no doubt have your own view on the looks of the F-Pace SVR but we think Jaguar have judged the look of this car very astutely both Inside and out. The standard F-Pace is already handsome looking SUV and the SVR really does build on this base. It’s added aggression with revised bumpers and an extended spoiler. Unlike so many of the top-performance SUV options it doesn’t go too far and there’s still a subtlety to the way it looks. That’s unless of course you really go to town with the colour palette and the options list.
Infotainment
So, what’s so bad about the F-Pace’s infotainment? Well, we do need to temper this slightly as it’s only bad by the high standards set elsewhere in the premium SUV class. The SVR gets a full digital instrument cluster and a wide touchscreen display in the centre of the dash. The graphics are clear but the menu system can be confusing and fiddly with small icons that are hard to press when you’re on the move.
Economy
Is it churlish to complain about the fuel economy on a 500 bhp V8 SUV? Yes, it probably is but that doesn’t change the fact that the F-Pace SVR has an unquenchable thirst for petrol. It officially returns around 20 miles to the gallon (mpg) on the WL TP tests. However, this is a car that urges you to put your foot down and unleash the V8 thunderstorm. If you do this regularly then even 20 mpg becomes nothing more than a pipedream.
Price
All of this prestige and performance doesn’t come cheap. At £, before options, the F-Pace SVR is around £20k more than the next most costly F-Pace. Therefore, you’re paying a lot for all of the extras that it’s bringing to the table. Compared to rivals performance SUVs it’s priced a little higher than an Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and a little lower than the BMW X3 M Competition. However, these are cars that have six cylinder engines while the SVR has that great big V8 engine helping it stand out even in this muscle-bound company. Larger performance SUVs with V8 power like the BMW X5 M tend to come in way over £100k making the Jag look a bit of a bargain.
So, there you have it, the best and worst things about the Jaguar F-Pace SVR. It’s a highly capable SUV which is honed to excel both in sporty driving and on everyday trips.
