Need a release from practical and sensible motoring? If so, then these high speed machines might just be what you’re looking for. Big power, lots of noise and dramatic looks all feature in abundance and all on sale today!
Porsche Cayman
First up is the Porsche Cayman. Back in 2016 Porsche took the decision to stick a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in its entry-level coupe and car buyers got very upset. Firstly, because it’s two cylinders too few for most Porsche fans but mainly because it sounded like a broken down Volkswagen Beetle. However fear not as Porsche has seen sense and installed a flat-six once more. While it’s a touch slower than the old unit the power delivery and that glorious noise just helps to hammer home what a beautifully balanced chassis the Cayman has. It makes you seriously wonder if you’d ever need anything more than this for the road.
Ferrari F8 Tributo
Next in our list is a 710 bhp (brake horse power) supercar that comes for the Ferrari stable. Every time a mid-engined V8 Ferrari comes out we ask ourselves how on earth can Ferrari ever improve on this. After a little tweak here and a little more speed there and they end up with the brilliant F8 Tributo. Its best party trick is to be a piece of Italian exotica that’s both insanely powerful yet so approachable. Ferrari’s brilliant driver assistance systems mean that the F8 challenges even the best drivers but also gives the lesser experienced ones a little pat on the back and says “don’t worry mate, I won’t hurt you” – that’s unless you turn everything off!
Aston Martin Vantage
In our opinion every Aston Martin should be fast, loud and yet just a little bit classy with it too. The Vantage manages to nail this brief perfectly. Ok, it may have a twin-turbo V8 that’s been borrowed from Mercedes under the bonnet but if you’re going to pinch an engine from somewhere then you may as well use one as brilliant as this. Anyway, Aston Martin haven’t just tweaked it to give it a unique character but they’ve also given owners the option to pair it with a 7-speed gearbox too!
McLaren 570S
Next in the list is the McLaren 570S. Moving the iconic F1 stable aside for a moment, the brand from Woking is still pretty new to the supercar game but they just keep on getting better and better with every new model. The 570S sits in the McLaren Sport Series category which means that it’s one of the babies from the range - underneath the full-fat 720S and the even more bonkers Senna. However, this doesn’t stop this car from being an absolute weapon. Around the Llandow circuit in Wales it set the outright lap record for a production car. The guys from Woking then introduced the Track Pack which shaved 25 kilograms from the curb weight. It also gained a little more aerodynamically which when combined trimmed of another couple of tenths. What a machine!
Porsche 911
If you’ve never driven a Porsche 911 then we know exactly what you’ll be saying to yourself right now. You’ll be asking yourself why all these so-called motoring journalists keep harping on about a car that’s looked the same for forty years blah blah blah. Seriously though, you just have to drive one because it just gets everything just so spectacularly and ruthlessly right. The traction is just immense, the straight-line speed is startling fast yet this car is so easy to drive. Then you have to factor in all of the controls. The steering is lovely, the pedals feel fantastic while the quality and attention to detail is just faultless. It’s the 911’s enormous spread of abilities which mark it out as a true great. This is a car that’s as easy to potter around in as a Volkswagen Golf yet is still hugely rewarding when you’re really giving it some.
