Rule 229 of the Highway Code
Use a scraper not your wipers to clear heavy snow from your windscreen!
With many roads still closed across the UK due to snowfall, and temperatures predicted to drop below freezing yet again, wiper manufacturer Trico has highlighted Rule 229 of the Highway Code.
Drivers must be able to see, so snow and ice must be cleared from all windows, as well as what might fall off into the path of other road users.
Failure to comply could result in a £60 fine and three points on your driving licence.
A Trico spokesperson also urged motorists to clear their screens by hand rather than putting unnecessary pressure on the wipers.
“The weight of all that snow and slush sitting on your wiper blades is really heavy, so something is likely to break,” he said.
