Get ready for the winter!
Here’s the DesperateSeller.co.uk quick guide to safer motoring during the winter months.
1. Check your antifreeze
As the name implies antifreeze, also known as coolant, prevents your car’s cooling system from freezing up. Without antifreeze it’s likely that your car would stop running. Not only this but your engine might actually overheat and crack, There will be minimum and maximum marking levels on the outside of the coolant reservoir. Check the level and if you need more then make sure you get the right type for your car.
2. Check your battery
While you’re under the bonnet, it’s a good time to check your battery’s health. Battery faults are the most common cause of vehicle breakdown during the winter. Checking your battery can be a dangerous job so you may want to get an expert to take a look. Organisations such as TheAA and the RAC can send you one of their technicians to help you do this. They may even be able to replace your battery there and then if there’s a problem.
3. Check your washer fluid
It’s also a good idea to check your washer fluid levels as windscreens can get filthy during the winter months. Pay attention to the kind of windshield washer fluid you use as some are concentrated which means that you’ll need to add water before adding them to the reservoir. You might even consider opting for a solution that contains antifreeze. Make sure you check regularly and top up when necessary.
4. Winter tyres
Roads can get treacherous in the winter so you may want to consider buying a set of winter tyres. Standard types that are fitted to a cap can harden up when it gets cold meaning you lose traction and grip. Although winter types aren’t necessarily cheap, having them fitted should mean you are better prepared for slippery and difficult winter conditions.
5. Pack some essentials
You should consider packing all the essentials in your car just in case you get stuck. Make sure you have warm clothes, boots, a torch and some food. Motoring shops such as Halfords can provide you with things like de-icer, a scraper, a tow rope, a first aid kit and warning triangle.
Finally, you might want to take your used car to your local car dealership or car repair centre to get a health check carried out before the cold bites. Safe motoring!
