Please, before you click on to another page please hear us out because there’s a lot more to the Peugeot 406 Coupe than just its Ferrari aping design. It’s got real style, substance and a whole lot of soul.
Styling house Pininfarina have had a hand in some of the greatest Peugeots since the early 1950’s however it’s with the 406 that they really broke the mould. That’s because it wasn’t just designed in Italy but it was built there too. In fact, apart from the floor and bits of the interior the Coupe shared almost nothing with the saloon which bore the same name. The frameless doors you can see on the outside were sculpted in a wind tunnel for extra cruising refinement and the net result was a four-seater coupe with plenty of space, beautiful refinement and a really subtle ride which, believe it or not, was Peugeot’s trademark back in the 90s.
In 1996 the car was available with a 2.0 litre or 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine but the real breakthrough came when Peugeot later introduced a 2.2 litre HDi unit. In fact, Peugeot was one of the first companies to fit a sporty coupe like this with a big diesel engine which not only made the car powerful and smooth but also very efficient.
It’s not all great reading as it’s well documented that earlier built cars were plagued with electrical gremlins. However, most were quite easy to fix so you’ll be able to find one that’s been quite well looked after and not too much of a problem.
