One word: Legend!
Famous for resisting Top Gears efforts to destroy one, the Hi-Lux is a watchword for toughness. Theyre built to be worked hard in the most trying conditions and even though the latest models have a lot more creature comforts than of old, theyre still amazingly dependable.
The HL2 is designed to be jumped in and out of by builders and foresters in muddy boots, while carrying a ton of sand in the back and a chainsaw in the passengers seat. So its spec list was drawn up for robustness, with steel wheels and tough black plastic bumpers. Its not without some luxuries, though. The seats are trimmed in fabric rather than vinyl, and air-conditioning is standard. The HL3 gains alloys, fog lights, side-steps, body-colour bumpers, various trim upgrades inside and out, privacy glass, an uprated stereo, Bluetooth and a touchscreen display that turns into a reversing camera. Not bad for little more than a grand more. The Invincible puts almost two grand on top of that. This gets you cruise, climate, bigger alloys, premium seats and more speakers, as well as showier side steps and speed-sensitive steering. Disappointingly, its also the only way of getting a Hi-Lux with stability control and curtain airbags. Nice to know what your life is worth, isnt it?
